The morning summer air was wafting over Josie as she lay looking out her bedroom window. She got off the bed and looked at her naked body in the wardrobe mirror. Her stomach seemed huge and the extra weight she had piled on before getting pregnant now seemed normal. A comfort even. Josie slipped on her robe and went to the window. Her friend the fat Robin was there, on the bird bath as usual, chirping the morning song. The only real difference now was that the Robin no longer needed to plump up its feather to keep warm with the heady days of summer, but oddly, he did. As the summer had approached, Josie did begin to feed the Robin less and some days now she never saw the bird, but not this morning. Josie was convinced that her friend could tell how she was feeling, because every time she felt down, he would suddenly appear at her window ledge. Perhaps it was her imagination, but this little bird had brought her from the brink, and she would never have coped without him. The Robin had been a constant in her life, unlike Steve. Who would run hot and cold? Sometimes he would send the nicest text messages, and at other times, he could be very cruel. Josie could not figure him out. Did he want her, or did he think he could mess her about, because she now had his baby. She was not sure how yet, but Josie was going to put him straight. If he wanted to be a part of her life and the babies, then fine, but if he were thinking he could come and go as liked when the baby was born, Josie was having none of it. Josie knew she was going to have to toughen up, because she knew it would be time to set up her own home. Things at home were not how she planned to bring up her baby and with her father’s drinking and smoking in the house, she knew she would need to make plans to leave.

Josie could hear her mother shouting something to her father. Which told her the peace and quiet was now over for today, and it looked like another argument was about to erupt.
